Step 2 · Compare your options

Compare mechanic quotes

Look at what each quote includes before comparing the totals. Weigh the proposed work, parts, estimated completion, and warranty notes together.

Compare the work first

Two prices are comparable only when they cover comparable work. One mechanic may quote an inspection; another may propose a repair based on the symptoms you described. Read the scope and notes before deciding which number looks better.

Check what is included, what depends on inspection, and what remains undecided. A proposal should explain those distinctions. If an essential part of the work is unclear, don't assume it is included.

Read the breakdown

Review labor, parts, the deposit, and the final balance alongside the total. Look for differences in the proposed parts or work that explain a price difference. Warranty notes deserve the same attention: read what the mechanic actually offers.

Check the acceptance information for payment requirements. Posting a request is free; accepting a quote is a separate commitment to paid work.

Put timing and location beside the price

Estimated completion helps you plan time without the car, but it is not a guaranteed pickup time. Parts availability and inspection findings can change the schedule. Consider those uncertainties alongside your own commitments.

Check the service arrangement too. A lower quote at a distant shop may involve transport you haven't planned for. A mobile option, where offered, needs to suit both the work and the location.

Choose a proposal you understand

Read the mechanic's profile, listed services, and published reviews for context. Then ask whether the proposal addresses your request and gives you enough information to decide.

Messaging opens with your chosen mechanic after acceptance. Before that, base your comparison on the written quote and profile. You can leave a quote unaccepted if it doesn't explain the work or fit your needs.
